Summer Cool Down: Healthy recipes to beat the heat

These days when we are thoroughly overwhelmed by the scorching August heat, our body is losing more water than usual, and therefore our need for water increases significantly. When we do not consume enough water, especially in summer, we are more likely to face dehydration (fluid deficiency). When the body is dehydrated, problems such as headache, fatigue, and dry skin can occur.

To cool the body and meet the need for water, you need to choose healthy drinks and foods. For this, you can take advantage of the food in your kitchen.

Here are 5 healthy and nutritious cooling summer recipes.

Watermelon Slushie

When the temperatures rise, the humidity increases, and all you want to do is lay out by the pool; nothing hits the spot quite like a cool and refreshing summer drink. This refreshing Watermelon Slushie recipe is easy to make and perfect for a hot summer day.

  • 1 big slice of watermelon
  • 7-8 cubed ice
  • Juice of 1 large lime
  • 1/4 cup fresh Mint leaves
  • 2-4 tbsp honey
  • Rosemary (optional)

Add the watermelon, 2 tbsp honey, lime juice, and mint to a high-speed blender.

Pulse the blender until the watermelon starts breaking up, then blend to form a thick, slushie consistency. Adjust the honey to taste, adding more if necessary. Enjoy!

Vegan Pineapple Smoothie

This pineapple smoothie with milk recipe turns simple ingredients into a nutritious, tasty drink. Sweet pineapples, milk, and ice are blended to turn out a refreshing smoothie that wards off the summer heat.

  • 2 cups fresh pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup plant-based milk

Place all ingredients in a blender, starting with the ice. Cover and blend until smooth. Garnish with coconut flakes and nutmeg, and serve immediately.

Nice Cream

Nice Cream is a sugar-free, dairy-free dessert made by blitzing pieces of frozen banana in a food processor or high-speed blender. With this recipe, you can easily prepare refined sugar-free, healthy, and delicious ice creams in your home.

  • 2 frozen bananas
  • ¼ cup plant milk

Freeze whole, peeled, ripe bananas until firm. The riper the bananas, the sweeter the nice cream. Break 2 bananas into 1-inch chunks (about 3 cups frozen fruit); then blend the pieces in a high-speed blender adding up to ¼ cup plant milk if necessary. Serve immediately for a soft-serve texture, or place in the freezer for 1 to 2 hours for a firmer consistency. Your ice cream is ready. Enjoy!

Add some flavour to this base recipe, like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries.

Not a banana fan?

It’s not just about bananas: Other fruits can serve as a nice cream base. But not all fruits have the right balance of natural sugar and moisture to blend up to a perfectly creamy, soft-serve consistency. Here are the fruits that do and how to prep them.

Mangoes: peeled, cut into chunks

Peaches, nectarines: peeled, pitted, quartered

Apricots: pitted and halved

Honeydew, cantaloupe: peeled, seeded, cut into chunks

Cherries: pitted

Once frozen, blend 3 cups of the prepared fruit with up to ¼ cup of plant milk until smooth.
